Weekly Statement, December 8

Lewis Hine - various websites and books - One good example of how artists help change society and how it operates. Hine was photographing child laborers around 1908 and his photos helped enact child labor laws.

William Christenberry - various websites and books - He has been photographing Hale County, Alabama for most of his career, and his work is an interesting way to see how an area evolves. He would revisit the site of old photos and photograph them often years later.

Mitch Epstein - http://www.mitchepstein.net/ - his American Power is a interesting body relating to the course. Interesting how our industrial edifices, in their enormity, connotate their centrality within our society.

Weekly Statement, November 3

A refrigerator is both a private and a shared space. One person likened the question, "May I photograph the interior of your fridge?" to asking someone to pose nude for the camera. Each fridge is photographed "as is." Nothing added, nothing taken away.

Mark Menjivar - http://www.markmenjivar.com/ - make sure to check out his taglines for each photograph, too.

30 Days: Minimum Wage - Surrounding the basic notion of the documentary - society evolving beyond a minimum wage and establishing a living wage that allows a person to fulfill their basic necessities - what other ideas can you infer from the documentary that relate to the class? Talk about a living wage, but relate it to the class, not simply ‘everyone deserves to have their basic necessities fulfilled.’ Things to think about: creeping normalcy, individual responsibility towards the environment, reorganization of society, the control of our basic necessities, business concerns and rationales for their actions or lack of action, housing and urban development, cheap food vs quality food, Seventh Generation philosophy, lack of grocery stores in poor/destitute urban neighborhoods,...

Do not feel like you have to rely only on the ideas I put forth.

Thoughts about advertising, our daily lives, and the information that is imparted upon us whether or not we choose. Why is it okay that we all know so many logos, why is it necessary, why do we not know much about our natural environment? Think of other questions and talk about them. Remember Matt Siber and his The Untitled Project - look at the North America and Europe versions of this project on his website. Think about the implications of all this imagery and your daily life. Look around you this weekend and think about all the information you see and why you should/have to know everything you are told via print, video, radio, and the web.

This is one piece from Shuli Hallak series dealing with container ships simply entitled Cargo on her website. Check out her work (follow the link attached to her name) and lets start talking about artists, what do projects like accomplish. Also, let's hear what you think so far of the class, some of the ideas put forth thus far, and the first reading by Derrick Jensen (you know the one you read).

Everyone Poops

My subtle way of breaking the ice. Read the book if you have not yet; you'll learn from it at any age. If you cannot tell, I am a father - specifically to three boys, so there are no more pretenses in my life. Now for the conversations...
